Time zones aren't just straight lines drawn from pole to pole based on longitude. They are complex, jagged geographic boundaries determined by political borders, national jurisdictions, and historical anomalies.

Why Longitude Math Fails
Because of these political borders, you cannot simply divide longitude by 15. You must use a geographic shapefile database (like our lookup tool) to determine which specific national or regional borders encompass the exact latitude and longitude you provide.

Earth rotates 360 degrees every 24 hours. Therefore, in a mathematically perfect world, every 15 degrees of longitude equals exactly 1 hour of time difference.

However, the real world doesn't work this way. China spans roughly 60 degrees of longitude (which should theoretically be 4 or 5 time zones), yet the entire country strictly observes a single time zone: Beijing Time (UTC+8).

What happens if I enter coordinates in the ocean?
If you enter coordinates in international waters, the tool will fall back to "Nautical Time," which strictly follows the 15-degree longitude rule (e.g., Etc/GMT+2), since no country claims political jurisdiction over the high seas.
Why do I need Latitude?
Borders aren't perfectly vertical. A city in the North might be in the same longitude as a city in the South, but they could belong to different states or countries with different DST rules. Both latitude and longitude are strictly required.
